What are Orthopedic Implants?
An orthopedic implant is a medical device manufactured to replace a missing joint or bone or to support a damaged bone while ensuring its stability and proper anatomical position. The medical implant is mainly fabricated using stainless steel and titanium alloys for strength and the plastic coating that is done on it acts as artificial cartilage. Internal fixation is an operation in orthopedics that involves the surgical implementation of implants to repair a bone. They are available for both temporary and permanent use and are chosen based on the seriousness of the injury. When a person has an injured or deteriorated bone or joint, but it is beyond repair by using the person’s tissues, prostheses are surgically implanted to replace the bone or joint. These implants are used as orthopedic prosthetic devices, and most patients report that they feel as good as new once their body has adapted to the implant.
In most cases, prosthetic implants are joined with healthy bone and tissue to reduce the patient’s pain and improve their stability and range of motion. The unhealthy tissues are surgically removed, and they are replaced with prosthetic implants that are designed to work the same way.
The recovery time after the application of implants will completely depend upon the patient and his/her medical history. Trauma Implants are manufactured using Titanium alloy and Stainless-Steel material because of their biochemical compatibility and inertness.
What are Orthopaedic Implants made of?
The most commonly used implants are Orthopedic Implants Plates, Locking Plates, Bone Screws, Variable Angle Locking Plates, Bone Plates, Interlocking Nails, Wires & Pins, and Hip Prosthesis, etc. The types of materials that are most often used in prosthetics are metals, polymers, and ceramics. Let’s talk about these substances and why they are used in implants.
The metals that are used in orthopedic implants are stainless steel, cobalt-based alloys, and titanium.
Stainless steel is often used to replace structures that have naturally degraded or have incurred trauma.
The most commonly used polymer in prosthetics is high-density polyethylene. It is the best material for prosthetic limbs. Polymer-based implants tend to articulate well with ceramic, so they can provide an artificial extension for a missing body part such as a leg.
Ceramics are used as an alternative to metal-on-polymer prosthetics in the replacement of arthritic joints.
Why it is important to use Titanium in bone surgery?
Titanium is stronger and lighter in weight compared to stainless steel. It has a large resistance to repeated loads making it ideal for its application as an implant. With a lower modulus of elasticity compared to stainless steel, titanium is less rigid which limits the amount of stress on bone structures.
Different Types of Orthopaedic Implants
There are different types of orthopedic surgical implants. Depending on the kind of injury, the area of the body which is injured, and the type of required implant, a variety of implants can be used in one procedure. The three most common types of implants are screws, plates, and prostheses.
There are two types of orthopedic screws, the flat ones and the ones which are Phillips’s head. Screws are ubiquitous devices. For repairing fractured bones or restoring stability in the weak areas, it is expected that the orthopedists would use screws. Normally, these screws are not removed later, they are going to stay there. To implant these screws, a screw hole is made in the patient’s bone.
The second type of surgical implant, as mentioned above, is the plates. Plates were first used more than 50 years ago in 1886 to fix bones that were fractured. Like screws, there are different types of plates as well which are used in the orthopedic implant processes.
- Buttress plates hold the fractures together at the end of long bones. They also hold the unstable bone.
- Neutralization plates are used for spanning the area of the fracture.
- Bridging plates provide length and alignment and stabilize the area.
- Tension plates secure the area which is affected until it heals.
- Compression plates repair the bones by using pressure.
The last type of surgical implant is the prostheses. There are a variety of prostheses used by orthopedists to replace joints and bones. Nowadays, many athletes are getting prostheses done in their knees and hips, and this allows them to regain full motion and alleviate the pain of a damaged joint in a short period. Proper knowledge about the variety of surgical implant products is used for this procedure that can help a better understanding of the procedures themselves. Few examples are:
- For neck fractures, an Austin Moore prosthesis is used
- For replacement of elbow Bakmi’s prosthesis
- For fixing inter-trochanteric fractures Ender’s nail is used
- For spine fixation, Tuque rod is used
- For elbow replacement, Souter’s prosthesis is used
How long do metal implants last?
The titanium implants manufacture by Zealmax Innovations Private Limited is the most suitable types for a variety of reasons. The most important reasons are that it can last for a long time, reportedly forever.
